RF Probes

RF probes are specialized sensing instruments used to detect, measure, and characterize radio frequency signals in electronic circuits and systems without significantly disturbing the circuit under test. They range from high-impedance active probes for oscilloscopes to near-field magnetic and electric field probes used in EMC pre-compliance testing. RF probes allow engineers to locate interference sources, measure signal levels, and map radiation patterns across PCBs and assemblies.

Near-field probe sets are particularly valuable in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) work, enabling engineers to scan board-level emissions and identify radiating components or traces before submitting equipment for formal compliance testing. High-frequency active probes, such as those from Keysight, extend the usable bandwidth of oscilloscopes well into the GHz range for accurate signal fidelity on high-speed digital and RF designs.

Typical Applications

  • Near-field EMC scanning of PCBs to identify sources of radiated emissions
  • High-frequency signal probing on RF circuits and amplifier stages
  • RF power measurement at antenna feed points and transmission line taps
  • Troubleshooting interference and signal integrity issues in wireless communication modules
  • Pre-compliance EMC testing in R&D laboratories prior to formal certification
