Hipot Testers

Hipot testers, also known as dielectric withstand testers or high-potential testers, apply elevated voltage to electrical components and assemblies to verify insulation integrity. By stressing insulation beyond normal operating levels, these instruments detect breakdowns, weak points, and manufacturing defects before products reach the field. They are a fundamental tool for compliance testing to standards such as IEC 60950, IEC 62368, IEC 60601, and UL requirements.

Available in AC, DC, and combined configurations, hipot testers range from single-channel benchtop units to multi-channel automated production systems. Output voltages typically span from a few hundred volts to over 100 kV for high-voltage cable and transformer applications. Key measurements include leakage current, breakdown voltage, and arc detection.

Typical Applications

  • Production-line safety testing of consumer electronics, medical devices, and household appliances
  • High-voltage withstand testing of power transformers, cables, and switchgear
  • Compliance testing to IEC, UL, CSA, and CE safety standards
  • Incoming inspection of electrical components and subassemblies
  • R&D validation of new electrical product designs
