Frequency Counters

Frequency counters are precision electronic instruments used to measure the frequency of periodic signals with high accuracy. By counting the number of signal cycles occurring within a known time interval, these instruments provide frequency readings in units from Hz to GHz. High-end universal frequency counters also measure period, time interval, phase, duty cycle, and pulse width, making them versatile tools in RF and general electronics test environments.

Modern microwave frequency counters extend measurement capability well into the GHz range, supporting characterization of RF components, oscillators, frequency synthesizers, and communication systems. Reciprocal counting techniques used in advanced instruments provide high resolution across all frequency ranges without sacrificing measurement speed, making them suitable for both laboratory and production-floor applications.

Typical Applications

  • Oscillator and synthesizer calibration: verifying frequency accuracy, stability, and aging rate
  • RF component testing: characterizing resonant frequencies of filters, oscillators, and transceivers
  • Telecommunications: measuring clock signals and carrier frequencies in communication equipment
  • Calibration laboratories: reference frequency measurement traceable to national metrology standards
  • Manufacturing test: production-line frequency verification of crystal oscillators, VCOs, and RF modules

Popular Brands

Keysight Technologies (formerly Agilent/HP) and Fluke are the dominant brands in frequency counters. Keysight's 53000 series universal counters are widely used in RF and microwave labs, while Fluke's bench counters are favored in calibration environments. XL Microwave specializes in high-frequency microwave counters for demanding RF applications.
