Regenerative Electronic Loads

Regenerative Electronic Loads

Regenerative electronic loads are advanced test instruments that, unlike conventional dissipative loads, return absorbed energy back to the AC power grid rather than converting it to heat. During testing, absorbed DC power is converted by an internal inverter and fed back into the mains supply, resulting in significantly reduced energy consumption and heat generation. This energy recovery capability makes regenerative loads cost-effective and environmentally favorable for high-power and long-duration testing applications.

Typical regenerative efficiency exceeds 90%, making these instruments well-suited for testing high-power battery systems, EV chargers, renewable energy converters, and high-voltage power supplies where conventional resistive loads would generate substantial heat requiring expensive cooling infrastructure. They are available in modular configurations scalable to hundreds of kilowatts.

Typical Applications

  • Electric vehicle (EV) charger testing and validation
  • High-power battery pack characterization and cycle testing
  • Renewable energy inverter and power converter testing
  • Fuel cell and hydrogen energy system testing
  • Aerospace and defense high-power supply qualification
  • Long-duration burn-in testing where energy recovery reduces operating costs
