Optical Time Domain Reflectometers
Optical time domain reflectometers (OTDRs) are instruments that characterize the entire length of a fiber optic link from a single end, without requiring access to the far end. An OTDR injects a series of short light pulses into the fiber and analyzes the backscattered and reflected light returned over time. The resulting trace — a graph of optical power versus distance — reveals the location and magnitude of events along the fiber including splices, connectors, bends, and breaks. OTDRs are essential tools for both installation verification and fault troubleshooting in fiber optic networks of all types.
Modern OTDRs combine traditional reflectometry with integrated optical power meters, visual fault locators, and fiber inspection cameras in a single field-portable platform.
