Network & Spectrum Analyzers

Network analyzers and spectrum analyzers are two fundamental categories of RF and microwave test instruments used to characterize electrical networks and measure signal spectra. Vector network analyzers (VNAs) characterize linear networks by measuring S-parameters — reflection and transmission coefficients as functions of frequency — enabling full characterization of amplifiers, filters, cables, antennas, and RF components. Spectrum analyzers measure the frequency content of signals, identifying spurious emissions, harmonic distortion, phase noise, and occupied bandwidth without generating a stimulus signal of their own.

Together, these instruments form the core of any RF and microwave test laboratory and are essential for product development, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance. They serve engineers across telecommunications, aerospace & defense, automotive, semiconductor, and electronics manufacturing industries. Modern instruments often combine both capabilities in a single platform — such as a signal and spectrum analyzer or a VNA with built-in spectrum analysis — reducing bench space and cost.

Typical Applications

  • S-parameter characterization of RF filters, amplifiers, antennas, and passive components
  • Signal monitoring and spectrum surveillance across commercial and military frequency bands
  • EMC pre-compliance radiated emissions screening and spectrum analysis
  • Phase noise, harmonic distortion, and spurious signal analysis
  • Cable and connector characterization using time-domain reflectometry (TDR)

Popular Brands

Keysight Technologies and Rohde & Schwarz are the leading manufacturers across both VNA and spectrum analyzer categories, offering instruments from entry-level benchtop units to millimeter-wave platforms exceeding 110 GHz. Anritsu provides a strong portfolio of field-portable and benchtop models. Tektronix and National Instruments (NI) also offer notable solutions in the spectrum analysis and signal characterization segments.
