Benchtop multimeters are high-performance, mains-powered instruments designed for precision electrical measurement in laboratory, calibration, and automated test environments. Unlike handheld units, they offer significantly higher accuracy — from 5.5 digits up to 8.5 digits of resolution — along with faster measurement rates, lower noise floors, and comprehensive connectivity options including GPIB, USB, LAN, and RS-232. Many models support multi-channel scanning when paired with multiplexer or scanner modules, enabling simultaneous monitoring of temperature, voltage, and resistance on dozens of channels from a single instrument.

These instruments are central to data acquisition systems (DAQ), standards-level calibration laboratories, and automated test equipment (ATE) racks. High-end models from Keysight, Keithley, and Fluke Calibration resolve microvolt and nanoampere-level signals with excellent long-term stability. Temperature scanning variants such as the Fluke 1586A Super-DAQ are widely used in thermal validation of industrial and medical processes.
