Micrometers

Micrometers are high-precision dimensional measuring instruments that use a calibrated screw mechanism to measure small distances and thicknesses with resolutions typically ranging from 0.001 mm to 0.0001 mm. They are indispensable in precision machining, metrology laboratories, and quality control departments where tolerances are tight and measurements must be repeatable and traceable to national standards. Types include outside micrometers, inside micrometers, depth micrometers, thread micrometers, and specialty variants such as blade and spline micrometers for hard-to-reach features.

Micrometers are available in both analog (thimble scale) and digital formats, with many digital models offering Digimatic output for direct data transfer to SPC software. Measuring ranges typically cover 0–25 mm per frame, with larger ranges addressed by interchangeable-anvil or multi-anvil sets. Mitutoyo, Starrett, and Mahr are the primary manufacturers supplying the global market for professional-grade micrometers.

Typical Applications

  • Measuring shaft diameters, pin dimensions, and bearing fits to micron-level tolerances in machining
  • Checking thread pitch diameters and wire diameters on precision fasteners and springs
  • Verifying wall thickness and tube dimensions in automotive and aerospace component inspection
  • Calibration and gage certification in NIST-traceable metrology laboratories
  • Measuring material and coating thickness in electronics and materials testing

Popular Brands

Mitutoyo dominates the global micrometer market with its Coolant Proof and Digimatic series. Starrett offers durable outside and inside micrometers trusted in toolrooms worldwide. Mahr's Micromar series is favored in European precision manufacturing, while Brown & Sharpe and Moore & Wright supply legacy toolrooms and calibration labs.
