Handheld Oscilloscopes

Handheld oscilloscopes — also called oscilloscope meters or ScopeMeters — are battery-powered, portable instruments that combine oscilloscope and multimeter functionality in a single rugged unit. Designed for use outside the laboratory, they enable field technicians, maintenance engineers, and service professionals to capture and analyze waveforms directly on-site without access to AC power. Many models carry CAT III or CAT IV safety ratings, making them suitable for measurements on industrial electrical systems and power distribution networks.

Field-grade handheld oscilloscopes typically offer bandwidths from 20 MHz to 200 MHz with isolated input channels for safe differential measurements on floating circuits. Key manufacturers include Fluke, whose ScopeMeter series is the de facto standard in industrial environments, as well as Tektronix and Hioki. These instruments are essential for maintenance teams in manufacturing plants, utilities, HVAC systems, and transportation infrastructure where benchtop instruments are impractical.

Typical Applications

  • Industrial equipment maintenance: diagnosing motor drives, inverters, and PLC signal lines in the field
  • Electrical installation testing: verifying wiring, grounding, and distribution panel signals up to CAT IV
  • HVAC and building automation: troubleshooting sensor signals and control wiring on-site
  • Power generation and utilities: measuring waveforms on generators, transformers, and switchgear
  • Transportation and rail: diagnosing signal and control systems in locomotives and rolling stock
  • Field service: verifying equipment operation after installation or repair without lab access
