Fiber Optic Power Meters & Light Sources

Fiber optic power meters and light sources are the foundational instruments for measuring optical power and insertion loss in fiber optic links. A light source injects a stabilized optical signal at a known wavelength — typically 850/1300 nm for multimode or 1310/1550 nm for single-mode fiber — while the power meter at the far end measures the received level. The difference between injected and received power defines the insertion loss of the link, which is compared against standards-based pass/fail limits for cabling certification or system commissioning.

These instruments are available as standalone units or as integrated optical loss test sets (OLTS) that combine both functions in a single device. Modern OLTS instruments such as the Fluke Networks CertiFiber Pro support dual-wavelength simultaneous testing, automated bi-directional measurements, and direct integration with certification reporting software — significantly reducing the time required to certify large fiber installations.

Typical Applications

  • Certifying multimode and single-mode fiber cabling to TIA-568 and ISO/IEC 14763-3 standards
  • Measuring insertion loss in data center structured cabling and campus backbone fiber
  • Commissioning fiber links in telecommunications, enterprise, and industrial network applications
  • Acceptance testing of installed fiber in healthcare, education, and government facilities
  • Verifying optical power budgets for active equipment including switches and transceivers
