Description
Overview
The SPM Instrument TRA73 is a hand-held bearing shock pulse probe designed for condition monitoring and fault detection in rolling element bearings. Used with the Bearing Checker, this probe detects shock pulses emitted from loaded bearing regions to assess bearing health and identify incipient faults before catastrophic failure.
Key Features
- Hand-held shock pulse probe for bearing monitoring
- Directionally sensitive — alignment tolerance ±5°
- Spring-loaded probe tip for consistent contact pressure
- Neoprene rubber sleeve rated to 110°C (230°F)
- Compatible with SPM Bearing Checker instruments
Operating Principles
The probe measures shock pulses from the loaded region of bearing rolling elements. For radial loads, the strongest pulses are detected within ±45° of the load direction. The probe radiates pulses within ±60° perpendicular to the rolling surface due to bearing geometry. Measuring points should be placed directly on the bearing housing for optimal signal transmission.
Usage Guidelines
- Position probe tip directly on bearing housing at marked measuring points
- Maintain alignment within ±5° of the normal to bearing surface
- Apply steady pressure until rubber sleeve contacts the surface
- Avoid cavities and fillets smaller than probe tip diameter
- Mark measuring points using SPM marker BEX-19 for consistency
