High Voltage Probes

High voltage probes extend the measurement capability of oscilloscopes and multimeters into voltage ranges that would otherwise damage standard probes or endanger the operator. Designed with high-impedance resistive divider networks, safety-rated insulation, and shielded construction, these probes attenuate dangerous voltages — typically at ratios of 100:1 or 1000:1 — to safe input levels for the connected instrument. Depending on model, they are rated from a few kilovolts up to tens of kilovolts DC or peak AC, and must comply with IEC 61010 measurement category ratings appropriate for the installation environment.

Differential high voltage probes permit floating measurements across two live conductors without a chassis ground reference, which is indispensable for inverter, motor drive, and switched-mode power supply waveform analysis. Passive high-voltage probes suit lower-bandwidth applications, while active differential designs provide wider bandwidth for capturing switching transients and rise times in modern power electronics designs.

Typical Applications

  • Inverter and motor drive waveform analysis up to several kilovolts in industrial power electronics R&D and maintenance
  • High-voltage cable and transformer testing in power generation, transmission, and distribution systems
  • Switched-mode power supply (SMPS) design and debugging requiring floating differential voltage measurements
  • Electric vehicle (EV) battery pack and powertrain testing in automotive engineering
  • High-voltage compliance and safety testing in aerospace and defense electronics
  • High-potential (hipot) and partial discharge testing in electrical equipment manufacturing
